NewsHour: In Colorado, Authorities Battle Mexican Drug Cartels’ Business Plans
Middle East Peace Project Begins Boycott In Colorado Springs
Story is here. Doesn’t look like it amounted to much, but getting arrested is protest gold.
You know, if someone could find some contact info for this organization, I’m not above setting up a counter protest of some sort next time around. Just sayin’.
El Paso County Voters Want Do-Over On Term Limits
Story is here, but as someone who made the same mistake, here’s the deal: there were 2 or 3 offices whose term limits were up for vote on the recent ballot. The way the issues were worded, it looked like we were being asked whether or not to limit these offices to a 3-term limit. However, if any of us had bothered to do our homework, we would have known that we were being asked to extend the term limit fro 2 to 3 terms.
Frustrating? Yes, but I feel that the fault rests with me and everyone else who voted without knowing the whole story. It isn’t worth paying for a do-over.
Lesson learned: don’t overlook city and county issues, questions, referenda, etc. Make sure you know with 100% certainty what you’re voting for.

La Plata County Crooks Offered Get Out Of Jail Free Fast Card
The full story is here, but the gist of it is that La Plata county is now taking debit and credit cards to pay bail.
Seems like this should’ve been an option a while ago, as I’m sure I’m not the only one out there who doesn’t carry cash anymore. Now, I’m sure you could argue that shame works as a deterrent in these situations, but with cities and counties having to cut law enforcement staff, a kiosk where one can swipe a card and leave is just smart business.
All The Bad Press Was For Naught: Colorado Springs To Restore Some Streetlights
I’m sure you remember the negative national coverage Colorado Springs received for turning off some streetlights as a cost-cutting measure. Well, seems like it worked to the point that a few might be coming back on.
Lesson learned? When money is thin, you cut costs. You don’t jack up taxes on a struggling population.
Colorado Tea Party on Facebook Seems to Want to Advance the “Birther Agenda.” Seriously?
It is my theory that the crazies from the two main political parties come out in full force when their party doesn’t hold the Presidency. As a result, I’ve kept a little distance between myself and any tea party groups/gatherings (I attended one on 4/15/09, but that’s it). I don’t think they’re gatherings of racists, though like any large gathering of any kind, there are probably some racists there. Mostly, I try to steer clear of kooks and conspiracy theorists.
Case in point: Ken Buck, a Republican running for U.S. Senate in Colorado, was recently caught saying, “will you tell those dumbasses at the Tea Party to stop asking questions about birth certificates while I’m on the camera?” Full story, including Mr. Buck’s response to the fallout, can be found here.
From there, it’s getting a little weird. The Colorado Tea Party Facebook page, which claims to be,

posted the following this morning:

You’ll notice that I had to grab it from my Hootsuite feed, as it was deleted within 5 minutes and replaced with:

So, my question becomes: is this group run by birthers, sympathetic to birthers, or is this just a case of bad communication?
Seriously, Mr. Tancredo?
You know, there was a point in time where a pretty large group of people wanted to “draft” Thomas Tancredo to run for governor of Colorado. Tancredo passed on that, choosing instead to tour the country making outrageous claims against the President.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I think something needs to be done about the illegal immigration issue, and President Obama’s increase in executive and overall federal government power needs to be reversed. However, I cannot stand behind Tancredo. This is the type of “lunatic fringe” speech that paints us all in a bad light. Tancredo is a big name, and that big name representing the “crazier” side of the conservative/libertarian contingent will get more press than anyone else. It makes us all look bad, and I don’t really care to be lumped in with that contingent.
LTC Terry Lakin to Pres. Obama: “Release your original signed birth certificate, if you have one…”
Birthers. They annoy the living crap out of me.
Don’t get me wrong, I can understand some of the anger from their side; presidential candidates have a list of requirements they must meet to actually be president, and it would be a horrible travesty if candidates/presidents-elect aren’t being checked out for these criteria. However, let’s see how Obama measures up
1) At least 35 years of age: President Obama was born August 4, 1961, making him 48 years old.
2) A least 14 years as a resident of the U.S.: He lived in Indonesia for 3 years as a young child, but the rest of his life has been in the U.S. (oddly enough, his political career spans exactly 14 years this year).
3) Natural-born U.S. citizen: According to factcheck.org, his birth certificate is legitimate.
Bottom line, Barack Obama meets all the Constitutional requirements to be President of the United States. He’s not required to show his birth certificate to anyone that questions this. Can we please move on from this?

Sadly, it looks like it’s passing.
